In response to the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics’ activity of “Academic Style Construction Month”, School of Accounting held a series of special lectures on academic style construction for all graduate students through Tencent Meeting from May 4th to 6th, to educate and guide students to implement the core values of Chinese socialism conscientiously, set up the concept of integrity, strengthen the legal consciousness, internalize honesty and faith into conscious literacy and behavior. School of Accounting invited three professors with rich experience in paper guidance and review to expound more details on academic norms and ethical issues in paper writing and research.
On May 4th, Professor Weimin Xie from the Department of Accounting gave the first lecture, titled “Writing Norms and Academic Ethics for Academic Graduate Master’s Dissertation”. Professor Xie first interpreted the spirit of the relevant documents and pointed out the serious impact that ethical issues in dissertation writing would have on the supervisors, the school and the university. And then, Professor Xie analyzed the problems that may arise in writing norms and academic ethics in detail through a complete academic graduate’s empirical paper, and exhorted students to adhere to academic integrity with sincere words and earnest wishes, to strengthen communication with their supervisors, and to strive to write a high-quality dissertation. 180 academic graduate students of Grade 2020 and 2021 attended.
On May 5th, Associate Professor Kejing Chen of the Department of Financial Management gave the lecture entitled "Paper Writing and Academic Ethics for Professional Master". Professor Chen first analyzed the importance and serious consequence of academic ethic issues in the paper writing based on the serious cases of academic misconduct occurring in recent years. And then, Professor Chen pointed out the common behaviors of academic ethics, such as plagiarism, research content fraud, paper fraud, improper signature, reference errors, copyright issues, etc., and analyzed the severe harm of academic misconduct from several aspects of what is academic ethics, what is scientific integrity, what is scientific spirit and academic ethics. Professor Chen finally pointed out that there is no shortcut to the academic road, so we must take our academic papers seriously and abide by the writing norms and academic ethics. 208 graduate students of Grade 2020 and 2021 attended.
On May 6th, Professor Hang Liu of the Department of Accounting held the special lecture entitled "Academic Ethics Issues in Academic Research". Professor Liu first introduced several major academic misconduct cases in high-level journals and their serious consequences to point out the importance of academic ethics in academic research. Compliance with academic ethics represents the respect for knowledge and mutual respect between people, while academic misconduct will seriously hamper academic innovation and academic interaction. Then, Professor Liu analyzed the academic ethics in paper writing from the perspectives of topic selection, empirical analysis, paper writing, references, paper signature, submission and publication, and hoped that students could strictly adhere to the academic bottom line and engage in scholarship honestly. 70 doctoral students from the School of Accounting attended.
The series of special lectures of "Academic Style Construction Month" obtain high participation and excellent response from students. They clear the scope of academic ethics, understand the serious consequences of violating academic ethics by attending the lectures. The inculcation of the three professors also makes the students correct the attitude of paper writing and academic research, cultivate the students' correct values, carry forward our good academic style of "Learning is Priority, Learning is Honor", and become an important part of the 14th "Academic Style Construction Month" series of activities of School of Accounting.
